The FJ Cruiser features a 4.0-liter, V-6 engine that develops 260 horsepower and 271 lb.-ft. of torque, along with a six-speed manual transmission or a five-speed automatic gearbox. The 4x2 comes with the automatic only, and has a Flex Lock-Up feature allowing the torque converter to lock halfway. The standard Off-Road Package (optional on base model) includes Bilstein shock absorbers, locking rear differential, active traction control, skid plates, Toyota Racing Development alloy wheels, and rock rails. The Special Edition features with water-resistant seats, rubber floor and rear deck, 12-volt 100-watt, and 120-volt 400-watt outlets.

Safety features include six airbags – front, side-impact and side-curtain – stability and traction control, antilock brakes with electronic force distributions and brake assist.
