Full-Size SUV Sibling Rivalry

These boxy full-size SUVs are stablemates under the Toyota parent company, but they also have some key differences. Pohanka Toyota of Salisbury takes a look at what separates the 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser and the Lexus GX.

Fully Redesigned and More Rugged Than Ever

If you're ready to hit the trail in style, then it's likely that either the 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser or the Lexus GX will fit your vibe. The new models are fully redesigned with more boxy ruggedness to go around. It doesn't take much searching to figure out that the two SUVs are closely related. Both use similar design cues and the same TNG-F body-on-frame platform.

Hybrid Performance vs. Old School

One of the biggest differences between these two Toyota stablemates is that the Land Cruiser now features a hybrid powertrain. It uses a 2.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine paired with an electric motor that sends power to the wheels with an eight-speed automatic transmission. This setup makes 326 horsepower and 465 pound-feet of torque. That's good enough to tow up to 6,000 pounds.

The GX is a little more old-school with its 3.4-liter twin-turbo V6 that makes 349 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque sent through a 10-speed automatic transmission. That's good enough for up to 8,000 pounds of towing ability.

Choose Between Three Rows or Two Rows

Most Lexus GX models come with two rows of seats, which provides a passenger seating area for five people. Some trims can be had with three rows of seats, which expands passenger capacity to seven. Currently, the Land Cruiser remains a two-row SUV and Toyota doesn't have plans to add a three-row option.

Off-Road Ready SUVs

Both the Lexus GX and Toyota Land Cruiser have an off-road-ready image, and that doesn't change for the new generation. The Land Cruiser sports a locking rear differential, off-road cruise control, hill descent control, and 18-inch wheels with 30-inch tires. On higher trims, it also includes driving modes for various terrains, a trail camera, and a disconnecting front stabilizer bar.

The Lexus GX won't be outdone with its Torsen limited-slip center differential and 4WD on base trims, but you'll have to move up to the Overtrail trim to get a locking rear differential, terrain-specific driving modes, hill descent control, and off-road cruise control. This model uses 18-inch wheels with 33-inch tires.

2024 Toyota Land Cruiser vs. Lexus GX Breakdown

The Toyota Land Cruiser is: available only as a hybrid, offers two rows of seating, has a higher approach angle, and a lower starting price than the Lexus GX. The Lexus GX has more horsepower and torque, more towing capacity, an available third-row layout, and a larger touchscreen.

At Pohanka Toyota of Salisbury, we love both of these SUVs, but the Toyota Land Cruiser just makes more sense for most drivers. It’s more efficient, more affordable, and includes a lot more off-road options at lower trims than the GX. Find out more when you visit our showroom.
